Applications: Highly efficient conversion of laser energy into x-ray line emission
of ultrashort duration (< 5 ps) led to the production of the
brightest keV x-ray source (1014 W cm-2) yet produced in the laboratory.
Such sources can be used to pump a laboratory x-ray laser, to generate
unusually strong shocks (> 1 Gbar), and to study radiation processes
relevant to nuclear weapons
