PLASMA DYNAMIC LASERS
Reshetnyak,S.A., Shelepin,L.A.: 1975, Sov.Phys.Tech.Phys., 19, 1076.
In the rapid expansion of a dense, highly ionized plasma in the plasma laser,
the electron gas is cooled, the plasma recombines, and lasing occurs on atomic
transitions. A method of calculating these developed using quasistationary
analytic population distribution functions over discrete levels. A quenching
effect is considered for a hydrogen plasma and a radiative mechanism for
emptying the lower level is analyzed. The possibility of an effective collision
mechanism for lithium, helium, and beryllium plasmas is pointed out which would
permit the use of large plasma volumes for generation. The dependence of
population inversion on a number of parameters is studied.
