Ever since their invention, optical lasers were used
as a gimmick in the movies sometimes as 'brute force'
death rays like in Star Wars
but more as 'gadgets' or personal
cutting tools by secret agents etc...

Media coverage of early laser prototypes
The initial demonstrations of lasers include the ability to
burst a red balloon within a transparent balloon because
of their extremely pure color. Their high power enabled
them to cut thin pieces of metal, the higher powered
lasers were able to cut trough thicker pieces of steel.
Razor blades were used and the power of the laser
was jokingly measured in "Gillettes" or number of razor
blades which the laser could perforate simultaneously.
Initially the laser was called an invention looking for job,
or a solution looking for a problem. Witness how the situation
has changed dramatically over the last few decades.
